SUMMARY:"Pleading Out: How Plea Bargaining Creates a Permanent Criminal Class" Library Series Event
DESCRIPTION:From Basic Books: A blistering critique of America’s assembly-line approach to criminal justice and the shameful practice at its core: the plea bargain\nMost Americans believe that the jury trial is the backbone of our criminal justice system. But in fact\, the vast majority of cases never make it to trial: almost all criminal convictions are the result of a plea bargain\, a deal made entirely out of the public eye.\n\nLaw professor and civil rights lawyer Dan Canon argues that plea bargaining may swiftly dispose of cases\, but it also fuels an unjust system. This practice produces a massive underclass of people who are restricted from voting\, working\, and otherwise participating in society. And while innocent people plead guilty to crimes they did not commit in exchange for lesser sentences\, the truly guilty can get away with murder.\n\nWith heart-wrenching stories\, fierce urgency\, and an insider’s perspective\, Pleading Out exposes the ugly truth about what’s wrong with America’s criminal justice system today—and offers a prescription for meaningful change.\n\nDan Canon will discuss his new book which is the talk of the town. There will be time for Q&A. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:"The Murder of Geneva Hardman and Lexington's Mob Riot of 1920" Library Series Event
DESCRIPTION:Attorney and author Peter Brackney will discuss his book “The Murder of Geneva Hardman and Lexington’s Mob Riot of 1920.”\n\n“In 1920\, ten-year-old Geneva Hardman was murdered on her way to school\, just outside Lexington. Both civil authorities and a growing lynch mob sought Will Lockett\, a black army veteran\, as the suspect. The vigilantes remained one step behind the lawmen\, and a grieving family erred on the side of justice versus vengeance. During the short trial\, tensions spilled over and shots were fired outside the courthouse\, leading to a declaration of martial law. Six people died in what civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois described as the “Second Battle of Lexington.” Join author Peter Brackney and delve into this century-old story of murder and mayhem.”\n— from the Amazon review\n\nJoin us for this library series/book club event. SUMMARY:Library Book Series: A Dark Room in Glitter Ball City by David Domine
DESCRIPTION:This true crime saga—with an eccentric Southern backdrop—introduces the reader to the story of a murder in a crumbling Louisville mansion and the decades of secrets and corruption that live within the old house’s walls. \nOn June 18\, 2010\, police discover a body buried in the wine cellar of a Victorian mansion in Old Louisville. James Carroll\, shot and stabbed the year before\, has lain for 7 months in a plastic storage bin—his temporary coffin. Homeowner Jeffrey Mundt and his boyfriend\, Joseph Banis\, point the finger at each other in what locals dub The Pink Triangle Murder. \nOn the surface\, this killing appears to be a crime of passion\, a sordid love tryst gone wrong in a creepy old house. But as author David Dominé sits in on the trials\, a deeper story emerges: the struggle between hope for a better future on the one hand and the privilege and power of the status quo on the other. \nAs the court testimony devolves into he-said/he-said contradictions\, David draws on the confidences of neighbors\, drag queens\, and other acquaintances within the city’s vibrant LGBTQ community to piece together the details of the case. While uncovering the many past lives of the mansion itself\, he enters a murky underworld of gossip\, neighborhood scandal\, and intrigue. \n— from Amazon review \nJoin us for our library series/book club event. SUMMARY:JCPLL Book Series presents Kevin Gibson talking about This Used to Be Louisville
DESCRIPTION:So\, people have asked us to have one of our book series events during the lunch hour\, so we are going to give it a try. Please join us on December 8\, at 12 noon. We will be having chili with fixings\, tea and lemonade\, and desserts. Best thing is\, it’s free! And you get to hear from a great local author and his newest book. \n  \nHave you ever walked past a building or location in your city and thought\, “I wonder what that used to be?” Well\, if you live in Louisville\, you’re about to get some answers to that question in This Used to Be Louisville.\nFrom “the old Sears building” that continues to be used as a directional touchpoint to a downtown theater that has been frozen in time\, you’ll get a tour of these places paired with stories that will inform and sometimes surprise. In the process\, it may just get you wondering about the many people a hundred years ago that traversed those places in a completely different context.\nLocal author Kevin Gibson turned his natural interest in comparing present to past into a book that looks into a wide variety of locales that contribute to the city’s legacy. And when it’s all said and done\, you’ll walk away with a better understanding of Louisville’s history and culture\, from major historical landmarks to neighborhood businesses to the Louisvillians who made these places important.\nJoin us for a lunchtime presentation. Food and drink will be provided.

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Attorney Aaron Silletto discusses his book The Kentucky Constitution
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Aaron Silletto discusses his new book The Kentucky Constitution: Text and History\nThis is a free event. Lunch will be served.\nThe Kentucky Constitution: Text and History is the first book to systematically present the Kentucky Constitution in light of its historical background and its overarching philosophical principles. The book introduces both students and practitioners to the text\, history\, and principles of the fourth Kentucky Constitution\, as adopted in 1891 and amended over time.\nUsing a text-first approach to understanding the Kentucky Constitution\, the book delves into the powers and functions of each of the three branches of the state government and analyzes the robust separation of powers protections written into the document. Then\, the book turns to specific constitutional provisions that are designed to protect and promote individual liberty in the Commonwealth\, including protections for individuals charged with crimes\, the right of privacy\, the right to bear arms\, and religious liberty. Each step of the way\, the book compares and contrasts the Kentucky Constitution with the U.S. Constitution\, highlighting the unique aspects of the state constitution and some of the ways in which its protections of rights and liberties exceed comparable protections under the federal constitution. — from Amazon Review

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Author Emily Bingham on My Old Kentucky Home
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Emily Bingham discusses her book My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song.\nFree to all. Lunch will be served.\nIn My Old Kentucky Home\, Emily Bingham explores the long\, strange journey of what has come to be seen by some as an American anthem\, an integral part of our folklore\, culture\, customs\, foundation\, a living symbol of a “happy past.” But “My Old Kentucky Home” was never just a song. It was always a song about slavery with the real Kentucky home inhabited by the enslaved and shot through with violence\, despair\, and degradation.\nBingham explores the song’s history and permutations from its decades of performances across the continent\, entering into the bloodstream of American life\, through its twenty-first-century reassessment. It is a song that has been repeated and taught for almost two hundred years\, a resonant changing emblem of America’s original sin whose blood-drenched shadow hovers and haunts us still. — Amazon review

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Canon and Cunningham discuss Pleading Out
DESCRIPTION:Attorney and author Dan Canon will discuss his book with retired Judge Charles Cunningham. Dan Canon wrote the book Pleading Out: How Plea Bargaining Creates a Permanent Criminal Class. The pros and cons of plea bargaining will be debated. \nFree and open to everyone. Lunch will be served. \nMost Americans believe that the jury trial is the backbone of our criminal justice system. But in fact\, the vast majority of cases never make it to trial: almost all criminal convictions are the result of a plea bargain\, a deal made entirely out of the public eye. \nLaw professor and civil rights lawyer Dan Canon argues that plea bargaining may swiftly dispose of cases\, but it also fuels an unjust system. This practice produces a massive underclass of people who are restricted from voting\, working\, and otherwise participating in society. And while innocent people plead guilty to crimes they did not commit in exchange for lesser sentences\, the truly guilty can get away with murder. \nWith heart-wrenching stories\, fierce urgency\, and an insider’s perspective\, Pleading Out exposes the ugly truth about what’s wrong with America’s criminal justice system today—and offers a prescription for meaningful change.   — from Amazon.com

Lunch will be served.\nJames J. Wilkerson has spent his career speaking out on behalf of others. In this debut collection\, Wilerson discusses his own experiences with masculinity and the ways it impacts our culture. As a lawyer\, an advocate\, and a fraternity alum\, Wilkerson has a uniquely inside look into the ways society has created and defined what it means to be “a man.” Through these essays\, he takes a look at how we got here and lays out just how much we would all benefit from a cultural course correction.\nJames Wilkerson holds his Masters degree in communication from Bellarmine University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville. He is the founder of Greek Law: a sexual assault prevention and consent program for fraternity and sorority chapters. He has gone on to write extensively about sexual assault through a legal lens. — Amazon Review
