SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Matthew Strandmark discusses Gatewood: Kentucky's Uncommon Man
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Matthew Strandmark discusses his book Gatewood: Kentucky’s Uncommon Man. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nWhen Louis Gatewood Galbraith passed away in 2012\, the flood of tributes honoring him merely scratched the surface of the life of this colorful and controversial figure. Throughout his political career\, regional and national media outlets focused on the policy ideas and public acts that made Galbraith a cultural fixture: public demonstrations\, an affinity for recreational drug use\, unfiltered language\, and recurring political campaigns. Best known as an advocate for the legalization of cannabis\, Second Amendment rights\, and smaller government\, Galbraith was a perennial candidate whose once-quixotic platform might have found traction in contemporary Kentucky politics.\nAs an attorney\, activist\, author\, father\, friend\, and opponent\, Galbraith wore many hats―and not just his beloved fedora. This revealing biography features insightful conversations with Galbraith’s family and colleagues\, as well as commentary from Paul E. Patton\, Ernie Fletcher\, Andy Barr\, Ben Chandler\, and other well-known Kentuckians. Gatewood provides a richer and nuanced understanding of a generous\, complicated\, and flawed public figure who devoted his life to helping others and whose legacy will continue to resonate with Kentuckians for generations to come.\n— from Amazon description

SUMMARY:ATTN: Event Canceled
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Bryan Bush discusses his book Louisville Gambling Barons. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nThe Golden Age of Gambling in Louisville Louisville experienced a golden age of gambling between 1860 and 1885\, thanks to the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers by steamboat and foot. They played faro\, keno\, roulette and other games of chance\, such as chuck-a-luck. Entire city blocks were devoted to betting. Horse racing and lotteries emerged. Gaming houses became grand palaces\, with names such as the Crockford\, the Crawford and the Turf Exchange\, frequented by famous gamblers like Richard Watts\, Colonel “Black” Chinn and actor Nat Goodwin. Author Bryan Bush offers up these stories and more about “The City of Gamblers.”\n— from Amazon description

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Matt Hanka discusses What's Happening in Your Community?
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Matt Hanka discusses his book What’s Happening In Your Community? This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nCommunities are not static or stationary organisms. They are fluid and dynamic and change over time. The role of community development in the change and transformation of a community is critical to improving and enhancing the quality of life of the community and its residents. This book examines how community development changes a community and why that change matters\, while also examining the relationship between community development and social capital. When a community improves its social capital\, change can happen because people can leverage their networks to produce better results for themselves. This book also looks at comprehensive community development and collective impact models and several case studies that utilize these models. It also looks at how the transformation and revitalization of a neighborhood through new housing creates opportunities for people everywhere\, and how effective placemaking strategies empower diverse groups of people in a community to reimagine their public spaces and the built environment to be more livable\, walkable\, creative\, and sustainable while fostering greater connections with people in their community.\n— from Amazon description

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: James Wilkerson discusses Consent Is...the things they didn't teach you in sex ed
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author James Wilkerson discusses his book Consent Is…what they didn’t teach you in sex ed. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nIn his second book\, James J. Wilkerson explores the question\, “What is consent?” With his background as an attorney and Title IX coordinator\, Wilkerson brings an expert’s knowledge through the lens of a former fraternity brother. With an open and frank style\, Consent Is _____ encourages the conversations that are often left out of healthy sex education.\n“When I stepped back and looked at the totality of the situation\, it was clear to me that there was a lack of education with this population (not just fraternity members\, but with young males in general). A university might do a quick\, student-led sexual assault skit during orientation\, but for the most part\, the only time men discussed healthy social sexual responsibility was when an incident had already happened. By then it was too late. The trauma had already been inflicted and the repercussions were already ringing out.\nBut what if someone could work with 18–21-year-old men to teach sexual assault prevention early in their collegiate journey? What if someone could help fraternities and sports teams weave consent\, bystander intervention\, and respect into the fabric of their organizations? What if someone could excite and empower young men to change their very culture?”\n— from Amazon description

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Bob Hill discusses his collaboration on David A. Jones memoir\, Always Moving Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Bob Hill discusses his collaboration on David A. Jones’ memoir\, Always Moving Forward. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nIn 1961\, David Jones and another young lawyer borrowed $1\,000 each to build a nursing home. That modest investment turned into Humana: first the largest nursing home company in the U.S.\, then the largest hospital corporation\, and today one of the nation’s largest health insurance companies\, with 65\,000 employees and a value of $65 billion.\nJones also was a great philanthropist\, although mostly anonymously. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nLiam is the boy\, lying in the hospital\, in grave condition\, a bullet lodged in his head. Otto is his father\, a commercial artist whose marriage has collapsed in the wake of the disaster. Paul Griner’s brave novel taps directly into the vein of a uniquely American tragedy: the school shooting. We know these grotesque and sorrowful events too well. Thankfully\, the characters in this drama are finely drawn human beings―those who gain our empathy\, those who commit the unspeakable acts\, and those conspiracy fanatics who launch a concerted campaign to convince the world that the shooting was a hoax. The Book of Otto and Liam is a suspenseful\, edge-of-your-seat read and\, at the same time\, it is a meditation on the forms evil can take\, from the irredeemable act of the shooter himself\, to the anger and devastation it causes in the victims’ families. Griner has managed to make an amazing\, incredibly powerful book\, one that is like no other.\n— from Amazon description

SUMMARY:Library Lunch Series: Steve Wiser discusses Carriage Houses in Louisville
DESCRIPTION:Join us as author Steve Wiser discusses his book Carriage Houses of Louisville. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Reservations are not required\, but you may RSVP the library at 502-574-5943 for planning purposes.\nLouisville has many distinctive houses that make the city a great place in which to live. However\, behind some of these distinctive houses are other houses that also are fascinating places to live. These smaller structures though housed both humans and animals. Known as ‘carriage houses’\, these utilitarian residences were where the servants lived who supported the ‘main house’\, along with the carriages and horses. Now\, in 2016\, these functions are long since gone by the wayside\, and new functions like offices\, inns\, and single family houses have take their place. Steve Wiser and Dan Madryga have documented these interesting architectural gems in this book. It is a combination of history of a bygone era and new modern design.\n— https://wiserdesigns.com/books-by-steve
